The United
States Congress met in a variety of cities
---Philadelphia,
New York and Princeton among them---before the lawmakers
were ready to commit to a permanent seat of government. In
1791, they chose the Potomac River as a natural midpoint
that would satisfy both northern and southern states. This
spot had the added benefit of being across the river from
President George Washington's home in Mount Vernon,
Virginia. The Congress hired a young Pierre L'Enfant as
the city's architect...and his design is in place today.
America's capital is one of the most beautiful cities in
the world and a mecca for tourists from all nations. Its
historic sites and landmarks, entertainment features,
dining establishments, exciting activities---as well as
sites of philatelic interest---are linked below. |
